Real Couples, Real Weddings, Real Words
Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you'll make while planning your big day - so we think the best people to ask are the couples who've already walked down the aisle with us. At The Villa Rose Hotel, a family-run 4-star wedding venue in Ballybofey, Co. Donegal, we're proud of the food, the service and the personal touches our team bring to every celebration. But don't just take our word for it. Below, three real couples share what it was really like to plan and celebrate their wedding day at The Villa Rose.
Keira & Niki

"That's what I imagine heaven looking like"
Keira and Niki both worked at The Villa Rose before they ever imagined getting married there themselves, so when it came to choosing a venue, the decision was simple. "Niki and I had both worked in the Villa Rose and we just knew the dedication, quality and attention to detail that goes into any event or function there," Keira explained. "That was a priority for us and for our guests, that there would be beautiful food, top class service and a stunning venue as well. So it ticked all our boxes."
They worked mostly with wedding coordinator Emma Browne. "No request was too big or too small, she was always at the other end of the phone or an email if we had any questions," Keira said. "Everything we wanted, she made it happen."
Having worked in the hotel before and knowing the huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes, Keira was worried she wouldn't be able to switch off on her big day. "But it was actually really reassuring that I was able to enjoy the day while being confident in knowing everything was being taken care of."
Their guests were also blown away by the staff's dedication. Many of them stayed in the hotel, and from check-in to the day itself, everything went seamlessly. Niki himself even took to the stage with his bandmates from Mojo Gogo - a special moment, as the popular indie band had just celebrated a 10-year reunion gig a few weeks before the wedding.
Describing the moment they walked into the hotel to be greeted by their family and friends, Keira said: "You don't ever get to have all the people you love in one room, aside from your wedding day. Just seeing everyone we loved standing there and so happy to see us. It was a really, really special moment."
Katie & Jason

"It is something you always hear when you talk to people who got married there"
With a shared love for the county, Katie and Jason always knew they would celebrate their wedding close to home - and with the Villa Rose Hotel top of their list of venues to visit, it was love at first sight. After meeting wedding coordinator Emma, the couple settled on a Saturday date to suit Katie's teaching schedule, and the rest quickly fell into place. "It all worked out so well," Katie said. "To be honest, the planning was so easy; there was no stress at all. Emma was great, any questions or queries we had, she was always so helpful. She was a big part of our day as well."
Tying the knot last October, the couple began their day at St Brigid's Church in Ballintra before posing for photographs along Barnesmore Gap. "I'm from Laghey and Jason is from Glenfin," Katie said. "We felt it kind of bridged the two areas together."
Blessed with good weather, the couple's next stop was the Villa Rose for their reception, where over 200 guests were already enjoying a drinks reception. "It was a lovely, relaxed, chilled setting before we were called into The Cappry Suite for the dinner," Katie said. "The food was unbelievable and actually, it is something that everyone has said to us since. The Villa Rose is known for good food anyways, it is something you always hear when you talk to people who got married there. The food was amazing, the service was brilliant."
"The reception area is lovely, they do a great job with the meal and the rooms are really nice and spacious," Katie added. "Basically, everyone that we have spoken to after the wedding said they really enjoyed it, so I definitely would recommend it. We are actually going back now for Mother's Day for a night away. We had such a lovely time at the wedding; it is a place we will keep going back to."
Laura & Niall

"Every single thing was perfect, despite the weather"
Newlyweds Laura Doherty and Niall Quinn tied the knot on July 4, surrounded by nearly 200 family and friends. With guests travelling from Derry and a guest list that required at least 50 rooms, the Villa Rose Hotel in Ballybofey proved to be the ideal fit. The recent renovations had already impressed the couple, but what truly sealed the deal was seeing the hotel set up for another wedding - offering exactly what they were looking for, with the warmth and personal touch of a family-run hotel paired with the polish and professionalism of a four-star venue.
Emma, their main point of contact at the hotel, played a key role in making the day stress-free - whether it was assisting with table plans or managing the logistics of room bookings for guests. "What had taken me a full day, Emma had done in half an hour," Laura laughed.
Following their red carpet arrival from the church, guests were welcomed with a spread of hot finger food and traybakes, a thoughtful touch suggested by Emma that ensured there were no hangry guests. "Nothing was too much trouble, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly on the day," Laura said.
Just weeks before the wedding, the couple learned the hotel had hired new chefs. Although Laura was hesitant and worried about being seen as a "Bridezilla," the team quickly put her at ease by offering an additional tasting to reassure the couple - and the food on the day itself exceeded even their expectations, with guests still raving about it.
The only flaw was the weather. "It rained from morning to night," Laura laughed. But the hotel offered the couple the option to take their wedding photos at a nearby thatched cottage instead, where the bridal party were greeted with an open turf fire and drinks as they sheltered from the downpour - one of the most memorable moments of the day. As Laura put it: "Every single thing was perfect, despite the weather."
